HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

Does anybody know release dates for the first wave of machines from both formats yet? HD-DVD was out before BR in the U.S. but from what i have heard we could be seeing BR players available over here before HD-DVD. Possibly in around a months time
Is this why the PS3 has been delayed, so that Sony dont get pushed to far back in the format war? So that Sony can concentrate on getting players out and using the components for the BR players instead of the PS3's? Just looked on Play.com the first BR player is scheduled for 20/10/06 at £999 but no date or price for HD-DVD.
I get the feeling that if Sony lose this battle and BR becomes a format exclusively used on PS3 then they could be in trouble. And the price they are charging for the top level PS3 they had better get that right aswell.

This will certainly put a new slant on the format war with the PS3 being delayed till next March. I think price will be the biggest factor in the begining not just machines but the costs of the disc and what they contain I'm interested if there will be any duel releases of the same film to see how they make use of the extra 20gb.

I think we'll know soon about the Xbox 360 HD drive...I hope it's cheap and good....I'm for the HD-DVD side of things at the moment.

Xbox 360 HD DVD Player and 1080p Support

Microsoft announced pricing and availability details for the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player in Japan. The accessory will launch on Nov. 17, 2006, priced at ¥19,800 (estimated retail price), and will come with an Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote.

“Xbox 360 and the HD DVD Player together deliver the most powerful and affordable games and movie system for Japanese consumers,” Moore said. “The freedom to choose their entertainment experiences is extremely important for consumers as they enter the next generation.”

In addition, Microsoft announced that its fall software update, scheduled for release later this year, will allow all Xbox 360 consoles around the world to output game and movie content in 1080p resolution.

I'm hoping Blu-Ray wins. But this is just a biased and spiteful hope as I can't abide Microsoft (who are backing HD DVD) and I do like Sony despite the PS3 delay.
