Mona Lisa Smile
Reviewer: Lee Griffiths
Issue 109 November 2008
Review: Julia Roberts plays Katherine Watson, a somewhat unconventional teacher who turns up at a conservative all-girls college in the 1950s and goes about shaking things up and raising more than a few eyebrows. Despite the impressive cast, Mona Lisa Smile is a lame, irritating and cliché-ridden Dead Poet’s Society knock-off, which sees a toothy Roberts at her most annoyingly smug. The Blu-ray doesn’t make the proceedings any easier to stomach. The dull, flat picture isn’t too impressive, and the persistent grainy visuals, a serious lack of colour clarity and a soft contrast definitely don’t warrant a Blu-ray upgrade if you already own the DVD. The feeble soundtrack doesn’t make much use of the True HD surround option either.
