Without A Trace – Season 4

Jack’s back.
The Lowdown: Jack Malone has plenty more disappearances to investigate as head of the FBI Missing Person Squad. As the season opens, Martin is recovering from the gunshot would he received at the end of Season 3 and the team enlists a new member, Elena Delgado.
Review: Without A Trace may not be the greatest crime series the world had ever known, but it is reliably entertaining. While things took a bit of a dive towards the end of Season 3, as Jack Malone’s descent towards depression and some implausible plot developments stretched credibility, Season 4 brings the show back to form (although there is a bit of a lull in the middle), with the introduction of a new member of the Missing Persons Squad, the feisty Elena Delgado, and Jack getting himself a girlfriend in the form of Abyss and Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves star, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio.
There’s no doubt that the show is helped enormously by the presence of Aussie actor Anthony LaPaglia as Jack, who might occasionally look like he’s not putting much effort in, but ever when he’s apparently on autopilot, he’s more watchable than most actors. The rest of the cast is great too, to the point where you almost feel it’s an insult to someone as superb as Marianne Jean-Baptiste (who was Oscar nominated for Secrets & Lies), to use her so little. Sadly the Season 4 box set doesn’t come with any special features whatsoever, which seems a little lazy, considering there must be promotional bits and pieces they could include, even if they can’t be bothered to make any special featurettes or record some commentaries. The result is the set is just 24 pretty good episodes, which just about makes it worth your time.
