Review: Celine Sciamma’s acclaimed debut is an assured coming of age drama set against the unique backdrop of the competitive world of synchronised swimming! During a long, hot summer, awkward teenager Marie finds herself desperate to join the synchronised swim team, and become closer to the glamorous, promiscuous Floriane. Her ungainly poise dictates that she can’t be involved, but when Floriane takes a shine to her, she is only too happy to follow helplessly in her wake. Whilst Floriane is off cavorting with hunky boys, Marie provides a useful alibi for her, deserting her plump best friend Anne in the process. The world of synchronised swimming provides an enjoyably surreal backdrop to the movie, and Sciamma’s delicate examination of teenage angst and emerging sexuality is undeniably hypnotic. One to watch.
