Top Gear – The Challenges 2
Reviewer: Tom Leins
Issue 106 August 2008
Review: One of the most enjoyable aspects of Top Gear is the bizarre array of ‘challenges’ that Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May participate in each week. This DVD gathers together the pick of the bunch from last year’s Season 10. We see them have another crack at crossing the channel in their absurd amphibious cars, engage in an ultra competitive motor-home race and even venture across to the snow-kissed Alps in search of the perfect driving road. However, the most entertaining tussle is the ‘Race Across London’. James is behind the wheel of a massive Mercedes, Hammond saddles up with a bicycle, The Stig uses public transport and Clarkson takes control of a racing speedboat. But who will navigate London fastest? Special features let you experience The Stig burning rubber in an Ascari 10, with a choice of camera angles, among other things.

Clearly, there is nothing better in this world than the sight of three middle aged men getting paid to do what we all secretly want to do when we are that age…
It may be a strange thing to admit, but you cannot get angry at Clarkson, May and Hammond running around, driving far to expensive cars and acting like berks whilst getting paid ridiculous amounts of money - for one very simple reason - they never once act like this is a job, it is clearly a passion, and passion like this is easily the best entertainment on TV.
These challenge are easily some of the funniest, bizarre and unforgiveably boyts own adventrues that you could find.
Driving to the Pole in a Toyota whilst drinking martinis and Gin, because you are technically sailing (over a frozen arctic sea!) Racing across london on every conceivable version of transport, before proving that you are in fact putting yourself out of a job with the result… and searching for a road that is the perfect driving experience, in a car that is the best sauna and hotspa on earth (James May’s Astin Martin).
Three middle aged men act as your proxy in situation you would kill to be a part of, and make you feel like these three morons are some of your oldest and best friends.
Top GEar is never about the cars, its about what cars make people do… and in this instance, how stupid, laddish and childish you can get when put in silly situations with cars.
Frankly… it’s perfect entertainment, and everyone on Earth should own this DVD.
Even driving license-less schmucks like me find this thrilling, funny and utterly brilliant…
Why are you not already out there buying it?
