Stuff – Live At Montreux 1976
Reviewer: Tom Leins
Issue 106 August 2008
Review: Stuff maybe something of an obscurity in this country, but they certainly have friends in high places. Chris Rea (no less) described this DVD saying: “The purity of what’s on this video is the true history of modern music. It’s as good as it ever got and ever will get.” Whilst gravel-voiced Geordie crooner Rea may be overstating the case a little, Stuff are a fine band who boast some impressive chops. The individual members honed their skills in the studio, and were amongst the most sought after session musicians of their generation. However, their session background has left them sorely lacking a focal point, and these tracks have a tendency to meander terribly. Vocalist Odetta steps into the breach on ‘Oh Happy Day’, but not even she can give the set any impetus. Definitely an acquired taste.
