Sharpening the axe.
The Lowdown: Commitment-phobe Charlie has a slew of exes he’s ditched for a variety of lame reasons, including cat thievery and smelling of soup. He finally finds a keeper in the delightful Harriet. The only hiccup is that there’s a chance that she’s a killer with a penchant for murdering her husbands…
Review: Being the star of such hit comedy franchises as Wayne’s World, Shrek and Austin Powers, it’s easy to forget that Mike Myers also had the world in stitches with So I Married An Axe Murderer. Taking on the lead role of marriage-dodging poet Charlie, he was funny. As Charlie’s loudmouth Scottish father however, he was hernia inducing. With the likes of Nancy Travis, Brenda Fricker and Amanda Plummer all getting their teeth into their roles too, they fleshed out a neat little script and turned it into one of the funniest little comedies of the 90s. If you’ve not given the film a chance yet, now’s your chance as it wings its way to Blu-ray.
When it comes to the technical side of the disc, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. In glorious 1080p, the colours stand out beautifully for a 15-year-old film but the picture isn’t exactly razor-sharp. Still, it’s a vast improvement on the DVD release. The sound is shown off somewhat comfortably with Myer’s Scottish yelling being dished out in sumptuous Dolby True HD. The result is a film buffed-up just enough to satisfy high def film fans, but it’s not enough to dazzle. The only real le down is the pretty appalling batch of extra features on board. Even so, Axe Murderer is a title that at £18, is well worth your money – that’s if you don’t already have it on DVD.
