Shanghai Kiss

Issue 106 August 2008
Review: Ken Leung (‘Lost’) and Hayden Panettiere (‘Heroes’) star in this bittersweet romantic comedy about a struggling actor called Liam, who idles away his days picking up plastic airheads in Hollywood bars. The only girl to really interest him is Adelaide, a precocious high school girl who acts wise beyond her years. However, Liam’s lackadaisical existence is thrown into chaos when he inherits his grandmother’s home in Shanghai. An infatuation with a sophisticated Chinese lady named Micki ensues, complicating his already confusing love life. But who will Liam choose? Both Leung and Panettiere (who excel in their respective TV shows) impress with more grounded roles, and elevate the proceedings above standard boy-meets-girl whimsy. Issues of cultural identity are brought vividly to life and the movie is peppered with well-observed details. All in all, a great debut effort.
