Screen Icons: Richard Attenborough

Issue 106 August 2008
Review: Dickie Attenborough gets the Screen Icon treatment with a box set containing five of the great man’s movies, including the sublime Brighton Rock (1947), Dunkirk (1958) and the Oscar nominated The Angry Silence (1960). The set also includes the DVD premieres of the post-war drama, The Ship That Died Of Shame (1955), and The Man Upstairs (1958), which sees Attenborough playing a quiet lodger turned killer who barricades himself in his room. While a mixed bag, the set certainly boasts a few of Attenborough’s most electrifying performances, with his stint as Pinkie Brown from Brighton Rock still packing one hell of a punch. Trouble arrives in paradise however with the lack of any special features throughout the entire set.
