Russia – A Journey With Jonathan Dimbleby
Reviewer: Tom Leins
Issue 106 August 2008
Review: Whilst our younger readers are unlikely to be enthralled by the idea of an epic TV journey across Russia with aging political broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby, this absorbing show is definitely worth seeking out for anyone with an interest in Russia and its complicated history. Dimbleby journeys across seven time zones, battling crazy extremes of weather in the process. Whether he’s soaking up the scorching heat of the steppe or shivering in the icy wastelands of Siberia, Dimbleby is an intrepid, engaging host. He does his best to cut through the many myths that surround the country, and examines the scars of Communism and the efforts of a society purposefully trying to modernise itself. He casts his wary journalist’s eye over proceedings, making for some though-provoking moments, but the thrilling scenery is equally memorable. Fascinating stuff from the BBC.
