Diamond Is Forever!

Review: To coincide with Neil Diamond’s grand UK summer tour, Eagle Vision has unearthed this 30 year old greatest hits set, captured by Australian television when the big man wowed crowds Down Under back in 1976. Four years earlier, in 1972, Diamond announced his ‘live retirement’, giving up concert performances for an extended sabbatical. After kicking his heels in the studio for a few years, Diamond was understandably keen to return to the live arena and duly announced a seven-city comeback tour in Australia and New Zealand. The sold-out tour earned rave reviews from critics, and this DVD offers up the triumphant final concert date for your viewing pleasure. 38,000 awe-struck fans swelled the capacity of the Sydney Sports Arena and an estimated three million more tuned into Channel 9 to catch Diamond in action.

Diamond, clad in skin-tight leather trousers and a spangly lemon yellow shirt, looks slightly ruffled as he takes to the stage, but he quickly finds his feet and it isn’t long before he is bantering cheerfully with the audience. The set (which lasts just under two hours) sees Diamond croon his way through a memorable selection of favourites, and the only disappointing element is the slightly tinny sound quality, which may well prove distracting to some viewers.

On-stage Diamond refers to the tour as his ‘most exciting’, ‘most beautiful’ tour, demonstrating his own perception of the concerts, and the DVD package contains enough treats to thrill fans. As well as an informative 47 minute archive interview and a few other odds and sods, the DVD boasts stylish packaging and a reproduction concert poster.
