Pretty in ink.

The Lowdown: Kat Von D leaves Miami to embark on inky pastures new and decides to open her own tattoo shop in L.A. Employing a colourful staff of talented tattoo artists, Kat will have to balance her business and her wild lifestyle if she wants to succeed in her new venture.

Review: While a fake tattoo from a candy cigarettes box is as close as I’ve come to permanently decorating my skin, even a tattoo virgin such as myself can appreciate the strange appeal of this docu-soap set in and around an LA tattoo parlour.

A spin-off from the insanely popular ‘Miami Ink’, the LA equivalent follows the saucy Kat Von D as she chases the dream of running a successful shop in a prime location amidst the hotbed of tattoo culture. Minimal drama ensues, but while the everyday shenanigans of the fairly annoying protagonist and her small inky army should be the stuff of TV nightmares, LA Ink manages to tap into our deep-rooted love of inane gossip by delivering stories and anecdotes behind the clientele’s tats. Of course, the ramblings of a heartbroken Jesse Metcalf are likely to push the average viewer over the edge, but those with a penchant for the art of ink and with an understanding and appreciation of tattoo culture, this is essential stuff.

The 13 episodes included on the four-disc set are given support by tons of additional material. The fourth disc includes about 80 minutes of interview footage with various Kat affiliates (including a belching Pixie Acia), and there’s about 100 minutes worth of bonus docu-soap opera antics under the ‘Kat’s Best Tats’ and ‘Kat And Cory’ banners.
