Review: Ex-Stranglers singer Hugh Cornwell recently “did a Radiohead” and released his new album for free on the Internet. Hot on its heels comes this physical release, bolstered by a feature-length DVD entitled ‘Blueprint’. Broadcaster Robert Elms probes Cornwell in arty black ‘n’ white at the Tate Gallery, whilst the live footage was recorded in Liam Watson’s retro Toe Rag Studios. As Cornwell points out in the interview, he has now spent more years out of the Stranglers than he ever spent with the band itself. It stands to reason that he wants to be recognised for his current work rather than past glories, but on this evidence his out-of-sorts new material probably won’t be enough to catapult him back towards the charts. The authentic backing sounds suitably gutsy but his nasal delivery and self-consciously obtuse lyrics are seriously underwhelming. Nevertheless, a decent package.
