Review: Armed with plaudits from Edward Norton, Dave Grohl and Diablo Cody, Heavy Metal Parking Lot is a cringe-worthy trip down memory lane courtesy of guerrilla filmmakers John Heyn and Jeffrey Krulik. Filmed in an arena parking lot in Maryland back in May 1986 (before a Judas Priest concert), the short film captures a hilarious array of heavy metal fans in all their fucked-up glory. Oft-bootlegged by rock fans over the years, the film received a 20th anniversary DVD release in the States, back in 2006. It limps into this country a couple of years late, and whilst the film’s real attraction may be lost on British audiences, Heavy Metal Parking Lot is still an enjoyable blip on the cultural landscape. Boozed-up, blissed-out rock fans jostle for space in the sun-baked parking lot, flaunting cold beers, stoned glares and aggressive t-shirt slogans whilst their distressing girlfriends (clad in even more distressed denim) fantasise about “Fucking Glenn Tipton’s brains out” or “Jumping Rob Halford’s bones”. At one point some toothless Mexicans appear, proudly brandishing concert tickets, grinning and slurping rum.
The welter of special features include the less amusing ‘Neil Diamond Parking Lot’ short film from 1996 (in which wheelchair-bound pensioners in ghastly Neil Diamond t-shirts slurp diet soda) and all manner of TV spots, featurettes, and documentaries which swell the disc’s runtime to around two hours.
Apparently, an original video copy got heavy rotation on the Nirvana tour bus back in the day, so if you want to see how Kurt Cobain passed the time when he wasn’t binging on smack then Heavy Metal Parking Lot may be the answer to your prayers!
