Great Expectations

Issue 106 August 2008
Review: David Lean’s seminal Charles Dickens adaptation, Great Expectations, must rank as one of the oldest movies selected for Blu-ray treatment thus far! Whilst it may not be everyone’s idea of a high-definition must-see, it arguably holds its own. Some of the long shots look pretty murky, but the close-ups are all respectable enough. They may not be as textured as those you would find on a contemporary offering, but the visuals look far better than any movie from 1946 has any right to look! The mono soundtrack is little more than a whisper, but fortunately it never hisses. In truth, it is doubtful whether this release adds anything to the Great Expectations viewing experience, but it’s always nice to have the option! What’s more, the fact that Great Expectations doesn’t disgrace itself in such a technologically advanced age is definitely a plus point.
