Four Minutes

Issue 106 August 2008
Review: The multi-award winning Four Minutes, directed by Chris Kraus (Shattered Glass (2002)), focuses on Jenny, a prison inmate who is looking at hard time for murder. However, hearing that Jenny is a tremendously gifted musician, the elderly Traude Kruger attempts to make Jenny realise her true artistic potential. While marvellously performed by the feisty Hannah Herzsprung and the brilliant Monica Bleibtreu (who looks positively ancient in this film), the powerhouse double-whammy can’t quite make up for the somewhat predictable and ultimately unsatisfying story. Though beautifully structured and not without its musical charm, Four Minutes is far too inconsistent to remain an all-out success. The DVD includes a few interesting interviews with the cast and director.
