Review: Escape To Athena may have divided audiences when it emerged in 1979, but its solid gold cast is indisputable! With Roger Moore, Telly Savalas, Richard Roundtree, Elliott Gould and Claudia Cardinale heading the cast, producer Lew Grade definitely raided his contacts book before filming! The story of a Nazi-occupied Greek island remains unconvincing, but this nifty transfer will definitely please fans. The picture occasionally crackles, but the visuals are generally impressively clean-cut, boasting a comic-book brightness and some lush establishing shots. However, the Mono soundtrack lets the package down, hushing proceedings dangerously. The special features consist of a set of unbearably grainy archive interviews with the principle cast members. Overall, it may be a surprise choice for high definition, but Escape To Athena is also a surprisingly impressive release.
