Carver
Reviewer: Tom Leins
Issue 106 August 2008
Review: Another month goes by and another gruesome horror movie turns up, flaunting its ‘based on a true story’ credentials. But is Carver just another lame re-tread, or does it have more to offer? Surprisingly, Carver delivers the goods, and whilst it may not have the chops to entice jaded horror fans, it ticks enough boxes to satisfy fans of straight-to-DVD horror. The plot sees a group on unwitting suburbanites stumble across the snuff collection of an obese redneck degenerate, with reliably disturbing consequences. The gloomy visuals are impressively slick for a low-budget movie and Franklin Guerrero possesses a suitably twisted imagination. All in all, Carver is a well-realised (if ultimately uninspired) rural slasher flick, and if demented torture scenes are your cup of tea, Carver has plenty to offer – deep, down and dirty with lashings of gore!
