Bette Davis 100th Anniversary Collection
Reviewer: Lee Griffiths
Issue 106 August 2008
Review: A first-rate collection of Bette Davis movies, this set includes six of the actor’s premium ventures. Civil War-set family problems arise in The Old Maid (1939), and there’s further dysfunctional drama in the Oscar nominated All This, And Heaven Too (1940). Davis and Mary Astor (bagging an Oscar) are on fine form in The Great Lie (1941), John Huston’s In This Our Life (1942) pits Davis against Olivia De Havilland in this slice of juicy melodrama, and the beautifully scripted Watch On The Rhine (1943) sees Davis playing a refugee from Nazi Germany. The compelling Noir-ish Deception (1946) rounds off a decent main feature package. Warner has piled on some retro special features (newsreels, cartoons etc), which adds even more value to the already excellent box set.
