Your favourite movies… sweded!

The Lowdown: When hapless Jerry accidentally wipes all the tapes in the video store where Mike works, the pair decide to recreate the lost movies by filming their own versions. As their ‘sweded’ versions become increasingly popular, angry Hollywood lawyers come calling and threaten to shut down the struggling store.

Review: Ten years ago barely anyone outside of France had the faintest idea of who Michel Gondry was. Over the past decade though, he’s managed to gain worldwide acclaim on the back of the fantastic Eternal Sunshine Of the Spotless Mind and the wonderfully surreal The Science Of Sleep. Having rapidly gained status as one of the world’s most consistent auteurs, he’s proves once again that his reputation is deserved with the charming and utterly engrossing Be Kind Rewind.

Laden with sentimental morality, Be Kind Rewind is a film made for film fans. With the likes of Ghostbusters and King Kong getting the ‘swede’ treatment, it’s superb fun that’ll have avid movie buffs hooked from the get go. The story of a community brought together by their love of movies, Be Kind Rewind is a testament to Gondry’s respect for cinema. Beautifully shot and eloquently funny, it’s a film that can rival even Eternal Sunshine. With wildly enthusiastic and funny turns from Jack Black and Mos Def, Be Kind Rewind is an entirely captivating slice of cinema. While the disc sadly lacks a bunch of other sweded films, it does feature some fantastic featurettes including ‘Jack & Mos Improvise Songs’, where the leads knock out themes for their creations.

Rarely is a comedy so simultaneously funny and poignant. In fact the only way you won’t like it is if you’ve never heard of the films they’re sweding. In which case, that’s your own fault.
