Dark Knight of the soul.

The Lowdown: After saving Gotham from Ra’s Al Guhl’s wrath, Batman has had a profound effect on the people of the city. Continuing in his crusade to clean up the streets, The Dark Knight faces the likes of Deadshot and Killer Croc and also has to cope with The Scarecrow’s return.

Review: Between Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and Indiana Jones, it’s been a pretty good year for blockbusters. Still, if there’s one film that could top them, it’s The Dark Knight. As the world gears up for Batman fever, DC and Warner have taken the opportunity to release this collection of six animated shorts to bridge the gap between Batman Begins and the hugely anticipated sequel.

Created by a selection of the world’s finest animation studios, Gotham Knight is, unsurprisingly, a visual treat on Blu-ray. From Production I.G.’s Crossfire through to Madhouse’s Deadshot, the six mini-adventures are rendered beautifully. With the format being especially kind to the many, many shades of black that the film has to offer, Gotham City has never looked so simultaneously dank and vivacious. As fantastic as the animation is though, unfortunately some of the stories on offer are distinctly weaker than others. The result is an eye-catching but uneven viewing experience.

In terms of features, the Blu-ray has enough bonus loot to have fans of the Caped Crusader salivating. On board is a chunky documentary on the scummy inhabitants of Gotham as well as the amazing ‘Batman And Me’ featurette, which chronicles the story of how Bob Kane brought his creation to life. You also get a preview for the forthcoming animated Wonder Woman film, an enthusiastic yak-track and some episodes from ‘Batman: The Animated Series’. In all it’s a great disc for Blu-ray owning Bat-fans, which should keep you going until the Dark Knight returns.
