Something borrowed, something blu.

The Lowdown: With 27 bridesmaid dresses stuffed into her wardrobe, Jane is the embodiment of the expression ‘always the bridesmaid, never the bride’. With her sister beating her to the punch for her boss’ affections and a smarmy journo looking to write a feature about her, will Jane ever get married herself?

Review: Blu-ray may have won the format war, but it’s still a long way off from toppling DVD. Therefore, it doesn’t help when a disc fails to show off the format by offering punters nothing they can’t already get on the DVD. Sadly, 27 Dresses is a prime example of one of these discs.

Firstly, the picture is only slightly clearer than it is on the DVD. Sure, it may not seem like much of an issue with the film being remarkably light on action sequences, but it’s a big problem when coupled with the fact that the image also lacks the much needed colour vibrancy to emphasise just how garish Jane’s dresses are. As for the extras, the disc disappoints again by bearing no exclusive features to make up for the poor picture. In fact the only thing you can’t knock is the audio. Generally though, you’d be hard pushed to tell the difference between this and the DVD.

On the plus side, the film itself is mildly amusing thanks to the odd decent gag and the banter between Heigl and James Marsden’s charming reporter. In fact the only real problem is that Heigl is such a stunner that she looks great in even the most hideous of gowns. Still, if you’re hungry for a mindlessly predictable rom-com, 27 Dresses should fill the hole nicely. Just don’t expect anything on the disc to blow you away.
