Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard & Ray Price – Last Of The Breed
Reviewer: Tom Leins
Issue 105 July 2008
This brand-spanking new DVD captures three of country music’s living legends live on stage as part of their 2007 ‘Last Of The Breed’ tour. The New York Times called the gigs a “summit meeting on honky-tonk singing” and they weren’t kidding! This two-hour set is literally bulging with honky-tonk – 35 songs worth, no less! 82-year old crooner Ray Price doesn’t look too healthy, and it crossed my mind that Willie Nelson invited him along in order to feel younger! The special features include a decent half-hour-plus interview with the aging trio, and also a brisk featurette that sees Willie Nelson give us a guided tour of his monstrously big tour bus! All in all a good package for elderly country ‘n’ western fans, although younger viewers may wonder what all of the fuss is about…
