Junkie, short story writer, political rabble-rouser – Steve Earle has adopted many guises over the last two decades. This concert DVD sees the ‘hardcore troubadour’ get back to his day job, with a set on the award-winning ‘Austin City Limits’ TV show. The performance coincides with the release of Earle’s 2000 album, ‘Transcendental Blues’, so any of his subsequent material is obviously absent. Earle’s set is low slung and uncompromising and will be sure to thrill long-term fans. His muscular backing-band keeps things ticking over, and we are presented with a solid set that blends country twang, bluegrass rootsiness and psych-rock power. It isn’t a classic set by any means, but fans will enjoy the chance to see the inimitable Earle growl his way through his formidable back catalogue.
