Roy Buchanan – Live From Austin, TX
Reviewer: Tom Leins
Issue 105 July 2008
Before his boozy jailhouse suicide at the age of 48, Roy Buchanan had been described as “one of the three greatest living guitarists” by none other than Rolling Stone magazine. This brisk DVD offering purports to be the “best high-quality audio/video recording of his complete performance known to exist”. If five songs represents his ‘complete performance’ then I’d hate to catch him on a lazy day! Buchanan’s story is undoubtedly a sad one, but it is tough to gauge exactly what the music world is missing out on, on the basis of such an insubstantial offering. As far as meandering guitar noodles go, it’s fairly inoffensive stuff with only the cover version of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Hey Joe’ alleviating the torpor. John Lennon and Eric Clapton both sang Buchanan’s praises, so I guess we’ll just have to take their word for it…
