Switzerland goes metal!
The Lowdown: Featuring the original line-up of Reginald Arvizu, Jonathan Davis, James Shaffer, David Silveria and Brian Welch, Korn treat the Montreux audience to 13 metal tracks. The entire concert was filmed in high-definition, and is presented with three powerful audio options.
Review: HD really can have something special to offer music fans. When done right, the extra pixels open up the picture, giving you a real sense of the venue, stage and setting. Likewise, new HD audio formats massively reduce compression, giving a wider base of sound, to the point where, if done properly, it’s identical to the original master recording. With this release from Korn, it has to said things aren’t perfect, but they’re good enough to show you what Blu-ray can offer music fans.
First the problems. There is occasional picture judder, things moving at fast speeds (such as drumsticks) tend to become a bit of a pixel blur and sometimes the shadows pixelate. While that sounds bad, you probably wouldn’t notice because the rest of it looks so good. The Stravinski auditorium looks superb, and the clarity of the band is incredibly realistic, giving you a real sense of the size of the gig. What’s particularly noticeable is how the lack of compression gives far more definition to the crowd. Often on music releases, the fans become a barely delineated mass of black, whereas the HD picture shows you far more and helps with the ‘being there’ feel.
As we’re dealing with metal, you want the audio as full as possible, and there are no problems on that score, with Dolby TrueHD and Lossless DTS Master Audio options. It may not be 100% perfect, but there’s plenty here to show that Blu-ray could be a brave new world for music releases.
