Johnny Hallyday – Live At Montreux 1988
Reviewer: Tom Leins
Issue 105 July 2008
The man that pop-pickers refer to as ‘the French Elvis’ is back with a vengeance! In the form of a creaky 20-year-old concert DVD, the music and joie de vivre of Johnny Hallyday lives on… or does it? The Elvis comparisons always seemed utterly ridiculous, and this badly dated concert DVD does his curious reputation absolutely no favours. Slick with sweat, Hallyday resembles a sleazier version of holiday camp crooner Shakin’ Stevens. The horribly dated visuals are rivalled only by the horribly dated music, which becomes shrill and unbearable as the concert progresses. Thankfully Hallyday has announced that next year’s tour will be his last, so concert DVDs like this should hopefully become even sparser. Naff, queasy and bloody awful – who the hell is going to buy this kind of shit?!
