Louisiana-born multi-instrumentalist Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown was a well-known figure on the Texan blues scene. In the DVD sleeve-notes, ‘Austin City Limits’ producer Terry Lickona describes Gatemouth as “a one-man cauldron of sonic intensity and originality”, and that may well be true, but this particular offering is a resolutely queasy brew that does Gatemouth’s reputation no favours. This set represents Gatemouth’s fourth and final visit to ‘Austin City Limits’ and it seems like a rather dubious acquired taste with its curious approximation of Cajun, honky-tonk and blues. There’s a thin line between noodling and experimentation, and this set falls on the wrong side! Sadly the most entertaining thing on this DVD is the obese saxophonist who can be found blowing away like his fat, mullet-topped head depends on it! Suffice to say, this is one for the fans…
