Albert Collins – Live From Austin, TX
Reviewer: Tom Leins
Issue 105 July 2008
When he was at his peak, Texas bluesman Albert Collins was so cool that he was known as ‘The Ice Man’! Considering Collins was a Texas native it took him an awfully long time to actually play a set on the Austin City Limits stage, but fans will be glad he did, as he died from lung cancer two years later. Albert’s cousin, Lightnin’ Hopkins, may have introduced him to the blues, but Albert soon carved his own solid reputation and stepped out of Hopkins’ imposing shadow. This televised offering sees the Ice Man treat the crowd to nine of his best-loved songs, all of which are now beefed up and re-mastered in surround sound. Rare tracks are generally preferred to singles here, although he does end with the classic ‘Frosty’. All in all a peculiarly middle-of-the-road brew.
