One Missed Call

It’s good to talk…
The Lowdown: In One Missed Call a chain of unfortunate people receive terrifying cell phone messages of their own agonising final moments. When two of Beth Raymond’s friends fall victim to this queasy phenomenon, she teams up with cop Jack Andrews to try and get to the bottom of the chilling mystery…
Review: If there’s one thing worse than a limp J-Horror remake, then that’s a limp PG-13 J-Horror remake! Despite its promising subject matter, One Missed Call can’t buck this lousy trend and ends up firmly on the remake scrapheap. If horror fans can get past the idea of a Takashi Miike movie being given a teen-friendly PG-13 makeover, then they will be confronted with an embarrassingly lightweight excuse for a horror movie… French horror directors are currently all the rage in Hollywood, but on this tame evidence Eric Valette will be refused a visa and sent packing next time around! I’m sure Ed Burns used to have some integrity, but that’s evidently nothing a big, fat pay-cheque can’t cure! The lovely Shannyn Sossamon usually provides a worthwhile reason to check out any movie, but here she seems hopelessly miscast. She was great as a student in The Rules Of Attraction (2002), but six years on she looks far too old to be running around college with her much younger friends. As this painfully overstated movie insists technology is evil, as is child abuse, horror fans everywhere will agree with me when I say that One Missed Call is evil too!
This disc contains both widescreen and fullscreen presentations of the movie, but otherwise there are no extras to distract you from the dreary main feature. The horror remake bandwagon continues to rumble on, but this journey stopped being fun a long time ago. If you have any sense you’ll stick with the originals.
