Chicago hope.

The Lowdown: James has three aims in life – he wants a great acting role, he wants to lose weight and he wants a woman who’ll love him. His luck changes when he meets the lovely Beth, but will she cause problems when it comes to achieving his other two goals?

Review: After taking two years to get a release, the directorial debut of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ funnyman Jeff Garlin finally makes its way onto DVD. If you were expecting a comedy steeped in the show’s trademark sarcasm, you’re in for a surprise. I Want Someone To Eat Cheese With is in fact a laid back and inoffensive romp that’s tone bears little similarity to Larry David’s hilarious embarrassment-based sitcom.

Mind you, it’ll still appeal to the series fans thanks to the frequent nods to the show (Mina Kolb plays his mother here as well) as well as having that air of being unscripted where and whenever possible. When most of the cast are composed of alumni from famous Chicago-based improv outfit, The Second City, that’s hardly a surprise. The result is a film that’s peppered with unpredictable characters and scenarios that make for utterly compelling viewing.

Still, as much as there’s nothing really to dislike about the film, it’s not one to bowl you over either. The impression you’ll get is that Garlin never intended his comic caper to stun audiences. Rather he’s entirely comfortable with coasting along, chirpily following the day-to-day trails and tribulations of a 39-year-old, overweight, single actor who’s still living with his mother. To that extent, it does the job very well – it’s a sweet, charming and witty film that isn’t life changing, but it’s still very much worth a look.
