Juno Speaks!
Thursday, May 1st, 2008
With the upcoming release of the Oscar-winning Juno, we sat down with the lovely Ellen Page to talk about life, pregnancy and teen-speak. Check out a taster of what she had to say below. The full interview is in DVD Monthly Issue 104, on sale May 8th.
How much did you identify with the character when you first read the script?
I feel like whenever you’re playing someone who’s honest and well written, you can connect with them. I guess in ways I connected with Juno was the fact that I wish a character like this was around when I was a teenager in high school.
You look very young for your age, do you get treated as someone much younger than 21?
Yeah, people always think I’m younger than I am. I still get asked for ID in bars.
You’ve been previously associated with darker material. Is that something you’ve actively sought out?
They’re just scripts that I read and I loved and wanted to be a part of. I think scripts like Juno are rare. It’s rare to have an honest, genuine movie that has a sense of warmth and optimism. For some reason, the only scripts that were coming in that felt honest were of that kind.
Is there any genre you really wouldn’t want to do?
No, I think there could be a good script anywhere. Maybe not porn.
So were you excited by the Oscar nomination?
Very excited, but mainly extremely humbled. Of course, I’m grateful to be acknowledged, and it helps your career and this is what I love to do.
Percentage wise, how confident were you about winning?
I didn’t expect to win at all. Well, maybe 3%, you know, I have to be an honest human being here!
